Size: Largest AFA Chapter in the World, with nearly 3600 members!

Constituency:   All San Antonio Air Force organizations.

Major installations represented: Randolph AFB, Lackland AFB and Brooks-City Base.

Key organizations

Meetings

  • Executive Committee (EXCOM) Meetings
    • Take place on the second Tuesday of each month, at 1600 hours at the USO downtown
    • Provide for conduct of chapter administration and strategic planning

Annual Functions

  • A combined awards banquet in March includes
    • The Joe Kellogg Blue Suit Awards: Provides recognition to the top 65 Air Force “blue suiters” in the local area.
    • The Charlotte and Carlton Loos Civilian Awards: Provides recognition to the top 40 Air Force civilians in the local area.
  • AFA Expo, attracting over 100 booths and 3,300 participants
  • Participation in San Antonio's Celebrate America's Military Week events, during November of each year:
    • Veterans Day Parade
    • Air Show
    • Wreath Laying at Ft. Sam Houston military cemetery

Awards: The Chapter's awards program provides recognition to a total of 125 Air Force people, military and civilian alike, each year.

Scholarship and Educational Outreach Programs:

  • Earle North Parker Essay Contest and Scholarship: $250 plus opportunity to compete for AFA-TX $3,000 award
  • Community College of the Air Force "Pitsenbarger" Awards: at three bases, ANG and AFRES; $500 per award
  • UTSA ROTC Scholarship Program: Seven scholarships with a total value of $2750
    • JROTC Scholarship Programs: $150 scholarships and complimentary AFA Memberships to Bronze Medal winners at 16 area high schools with a total value of over $ 2700.00
    • AFA Member/Immediate Family Member Scholarships; 3 awards at $1000 each
    • UTSA Center for Infrastructure Assurance and Security (Homeland Defense) Scholarship, $500.00
  • USA Today/AEF “Visions of Exploration” programs in 30 elementary schools impacting over 1000 young people and valued at $ 2700.00.
  • Educator Recognition
    • Teacher of the Year Program
    • Christa McAuliffe Memorial Award
  • Each year the Alamo Chapter and its affiliate, the Alamo AFA Aerospace Education Foundation invests over $10,000 in educational outreach to every level of education, primary, secondary and graduate in the south Texas area.

Sponsorship: The Alamo Chapter provides financial sponsorship to the following events, among others.

  • Air Force Recruiting Service Operation Blue Suit
  • AETC Outstanding Airmen of the Year Program

  • Various base-level professional development programs
