Medina Valley High School - 8 February 2005

Colonel H.B. McCarraher III, Director of AFJROTC, visited the Texas-20009th AFJROTC Cadet Operations Group last Thursday.  Colonel Mac's visit went well in spite of the loss of electricity Thursday morning from 0245 to 0945 hours.  I guess that we could say, "He blew out our lights". The cadets were on their best behavior Thursday and did an excellent job briefing Colonel Mac without slides because of the power outage and informing him about our program.   He presented the Flight Cadet of the Month trophies, an Honorary Cadet trophy to MVHS senior Amber Franger, and addressed the Cadet Corps.  Mr. James Chase, MVHS Principal, presented Colonel McCarraher a trophy as a memento of his visit.

Colonel McCarraher visited with the high school counselors in an effort to increase enrollment in the Aerospace Science and Leadership program.  He had courtesy calls with Mr. Chase and Brian Emerson, MVHS Athletic Director.  He toured our local AFJROTC facilities and was briefed on the facility move in the fall of 2006.  He enjoyed lunch with the senior cadets.  Robert Hancock, Mayor of Castroville, had a courtesy visit with him.  He got a tour of the historic section of Castroville.  The afternoon coffee at Sammy's Restaurant went well.  We had representation from the Chamber of Commerce, VFW, American Legion, Garden Club, Park Board, Public Library and City Council.

It was a super example of the community relationships with AFJROTC.  He was very impressed with Texas-20009th’s strong community relations and the community service that we do. He was very interested in The Castroville Municipal Airport operation and what they can provide for cadets in support of the Aerospace Science and Leadership II Science of Flight curriculum.  The new terminal building is certainly impressive for a small town.  Colonel McCarraher is going to look into getting some funding for ground school and flight lessons up to solo for the cadets.  His visit was very successful and we are glad that he picked the Texas-20009th.
